Increased Risk Of Breast Cancer In Barbecue Lovers

Postmenopausal women who like barbecue and smoked meat should know that more fruits and vegetables should be eaten with it.

The team of Dr. Susan Stick of the University of South Carolina found that postmenopausal women who ate more fried, roasted or smoked red meat had a 47 percent increased risk of developing breast cancer. Those who consume large amounts of meat at the expense of insufficient amounts of vegetables are at 74% higher risk of developing this disease compared to menopausal women who have a balanced diet.

Researchers have found no significant relationship between shorter or longer meat intake and the development of breast cancer in menopausal women. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines are known to be carcinogens produced by cooking meat at high temperatures. Such compounds are found in fried, roasted and smoked meats.

In an interview with Reuters Health, Dr. Stick recommended eating more plant-based products and restricting red meat - especially roasted, fried and smoked.
