A Korean study showed that the risk of complications after a stroke is much higher among patients deprived of proper nutrition. Dr. Dong-Wa Kang and colleagues at Ulsan Medical University in Seoul studied the effects of malnutrition among 131 people who had had a stroke. The condition was assessed up to 24 hours after the accident, as well as one week later.

Patients who have lost more than 10% of their weight in the last 3 months or 6% of it in the last week are considered malnourished. Another criterion for judging is the state of the proteins in the blood.

Among those admitted with malnutrition, the incidence of complications one week later was 7 times higher.

Adequate nutrition of patients after a stroke has a beneficial effect on the outcome of the disease.
