Useful properties of watermelon

Watermelon has a number of useful properties. It has choleretic, diuretic and mild laxative effects; also antipyretic and tonic properties; normalizes metabolism, regulates water-salt balance.

This fruit is a cure for obese people. It is also useful in hypertension (which often goes along with obesity), due to the presence of magnesium in the composition. In these diseases, unloading days with watermelon are indicated under medical supervision.

To provide the necessary daily amount of magnesium for your body, you should eat 150 grams of watermelon (its soft part). If you want the effect to be healing, you should consume 1-2 kg.

The strong diuretic effect of the fetus is in favor of those who have diseases of the kidneys, liver, bile, gastrointestinal tract, hypertension, gout. Watermelon cleanses the body, releases it from toxins, helps reduce cholesterol levels. This is good for all of us, but especially for those suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Watermelon juice gently cleanses the kidneys (thanks to the alkaline compounds it contains) without irritating the urinary tract. In nephritis, cystitis and cholelithiasis, experts in these fields advise to eat 2-2.5 kg of fruit per day. Again, the juice removes toxins from the liver or simply cleanses it and helps with acute liver disease.

Folic acid is necessary for normal metabolism and has antisclerotic action. Iron, which is contained in large enough quantities in watermelon, makes the fruit extremely important for people with various forms of anemia and blood diseases. It is of great benefit to pregnant and lactating women, because its consumption satisfies the need for sweet foods and at the same time there is no risk of gaining weight. In addition, it supplies the body with the necessary amount of iron. In the last months of pregnancy, however, those who have swelling should be careful with the use of watermelons. Diabetics can eat less of the fruit.

The delicate fibers in watermelon have laxative properties and help the motor function of the intestine, therefore they fight constipation, contribute to the excretion of cholesterol.

It is important to know:

  • Large amounts of watermelon should not be consumed by those suffering from diabetes, kidney stones, severe diseases of the pancreas, prostate, pyelonephritis.
  • Watermelon should not be taken with salty foods, because salt retains fluid in the body and swelling is possible.
  • Make sure the watermelon you buy does not contain nitrates. The use of fruit with a high content of such could cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Nitrates are most dangerous for children and people with kidney disease.
  • If you are not sure whether the fruit is "clean" of nitrates, eat only the inside, because these substances accumulate mainly in the peel and in the parts closest to it.
