Myasthenia (muscle Weakness)

Myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness) is a neuromuscular disease of an autoimmune nature. The diet that helps is rich in potassium.

Myasthenia (muscle weakness) is a neuromuscular disease of an autoimmune nature.

Primary symptoms:

  • excessive fatigue;
  • skeletal muscle weakness;
  • muscle weakness during intense movements and prolonged work;
  • complete failure of the muscles to work and after some time to restore their functions;
  • the myasthenia sufferer feels well in the morning after waking up, but a few hours later the above-mentioned symptoms appear.

The food that people with this problem need should be rich in potassium. It helps with skin diseases and to restore muscle function.

Potassium sources:
  • fresh fruits (oranges, bananas, avocados, melons);
  • fresh vegetables (beans, potatoes, turnips, pumpkin);
  • unground grains;
  • parsnip;
  • dried apricots, raisins;

Calcium-rich foods are also especially important in the presence of the disease. The element participates in processes such as:

  • muscle contractility;
  • increases the excitability of nerve tissues;
  • maintains healthy bones and teeth, which prevents fractures in trauma. People with myasthenia gravis are more susceptible to trauma and injury than others.
Sources of calcium:
  • dairy products - the main source;
  • fresh vegetables - cabbage (colored, white), turnips (its leaves), peas and legumes;
  • nuts;
  • figs;
  • egg yolk;
  • soft bones of sardines and salmon.

In order to absorb calcium well in the body, it must be taken together with phosphorus (in a ratio of 1: 2). Phosphorus is very important in myasthenia gravis - it helps conserve energy in cells.

Phosphorus sources:
  • cottage cheese;
  • cheese;
  • meat;
  • brain;
  • beef liver;
  • fish;
  • eggs;
  • buckwheat, barley, oats;
  • nuts.

Harmful foods in myasthenia gravis

Foods containing magnesium should be excluded from the menu as it relaxes the muscles. Yeah, they're like that:
  • products of plant origin - spinach, broccoli, raspberries, blackberries, sesame seeds;
  • products of animal origin - fish (flounder, carp, shrimp, sea bass, mackerel, cod).
Diuretics are contraindicated because they wash away calcium and potassium, which are essential for the treatment of myasthenia gravis:
  • green tea;
  • Apple vinegar;
  • dandelion;
  • nettle;
  • slices;
  • cucumbers;
  • tomatoes;
  • religious;
  • beets.
