Hypothyroidism is a pathology provoked by a deficiency of thyroid hormones. The condition is the opposite of hyperthyroidism, in which there is increased production of hormones.

It is no coincidence that the thyroid gland is defined as the gland of longevity because it is responsible for the youth and health of the body. If it functions properly, the body produces sufficient amounts of hormones to maintain the normal rate of metabolic processes that take place in it.

 

Useful foods for hypothyroidism

For successful treatment of the disease, it is important that the patient receives sufficient amounts of iodine with food. The element is contained in iodized salt, seaweed and fish, feijoa.

The patient's diet should be composed mainly of protein, and easily digestible carbohydrates and fats should be limited.

To be consumed:
  • meat products - nutritionists recommend fatty broths and boiled chicken;
  • nuts - support the thyroid gland and improve metabolic processes;
  • dairy products, regardless of their fat content;
  • fish.

Caffeine is thought to have a beneficial effect on the thyroid gland because it contains B vitamins and magnesium. Of course, you should not overdo the consumption of coffee (no more than 2-3 per day).
As for tea, it should be limited because the presence of fluoride in it does not work well on the gland.

 

Therapeutic nutrition in hypothyroidism involves regular provision of the necessary amounts of vitamins and trace elements to the diseased organism. Therefore, fresh raw vegetables, fruits and green leafy plants should be present on the table all year round.

One of the main products on the menu of those suffering from the problem should be coconut oil. It contains medium chain fatty acids and is characterized by antioxidant properties.

Sprouted hemp, flax and chia seeds saturate the body with alpha-lipoic acid, which regulates thyroid function. No less useful are sprouted legumes and cereals.

 

Harmful and contraindicated for consumption in hypothyroidism

Limit consumption to:

  • all varieties of cabbage, turnips, mustard;
  • tap water because it contains a lot of chlorine and fluoride, which block iodine receptors;
  • the intake of water should not exceed 1.5 liters per day, because the disease is usually accompanied by edema;
  • all soy products - they provoke the production of estrogen and suppress the functions of the thyroid gland;
  • pasta of durum wheat;
  • simple carbohydrates such as fast food, butter dough pastries;
  • refined products that increase blood glucose levels and activate the production of stress hormones (unpolished rice, white flour and sugar);
  • egg yolks, smoked products, chips and other foods that provoke an increase in blood cholesterol levels;
  • sweet fruits and berries;
  • polyunsaturated and transgenic fats;
  • black and red caviar, brain;
  • replace common salt with iodized.
