Neutropenia is a decrease in the number of neutrophils, which leads to susceptibility to bacteria (fungi), decreases the body's overall resistance to viruses and infections and weakens the immune system.

The disease can develop from a few days to several months, and sometimes even several years. It can be a consequence / side effect of the use of drugs, very rarely the problem is congenital.

Useful foods for neutropenia

When neutrophils are reduced, the body is exposed to various infections, and even ordinary foods can be dangerous to health. Therefore, a special diet is needed that excludes the consumption of perishable products or those that are not well processed, as they may contain pathogenic bacteria or microbes.

In order to fight the patient with the problem, as well as as a prophylaxis against its development, it is necessary to take the foods that follow.

  • From dairy products - fresh milk, but pasteurized, as well as yogurt, prepared from pasteurized fresh. Frozen desserts, ice cream yogurt, packaged ice cream, but without nuts and raisins in them. Of the cheeses suitable are Parmesan, cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella.
  • All types of meat and fish, but must be well cooked or baked. Even smoked products and sausages are allowed, but of good quality and clear origin.
  • Eggs, but only hard boiled.
  • All kinds of soups, but freshly prepared.
  • Of the preferred fruits are tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, bananas and melons. They can be canned, frozen or cooked, the juices can be pasteurized.
  • Packaged roasted nuts and products stored in vacuum packs.
  • Potatoes, rice, pasta and noodles, prepared in any way.
  • Of the pasta, the packaged ones (bread, biscuits, etc.) are suitable.
  • Alcoholic beverages should be consumed only after consulting a doctor.

Dangerous and harmful foods in neutropenia

Exclude from the menu all foods that may contain bacteria and germs:

  • not to take unpasteurized whole milk, homemade ice cream;
  • poorly roasted or cooked meat;
  • unsuitable cheeses: feta, gorgonzola, spicy cheddar, goat's milk cheese, types with mold, Roquefort, cheese with additives (spices, herbs, vegetables);
  • home-made meat salads and salads with seafood;
  • raw and soft-boiled eggs;
  • to avoid cold vegetarian soups;
  • from drinks: yeast, freshly squeezed juices;
  • prepared potatoes, including french fries;
  • perishable confectionery (cakes and others).
