Probiotics - Also Suitable For Depression

Consuming foods with beneficial bacteria produce lower levels of the stress hormone corticosterone.

The probiotics in yogurt are known to support colon health. According to a new study, they are also useful against depression.

Scientists have found that bacteria in the gut have a direct effect on the brain .

They study the relationship between stomach problems and stress and mental disorders.

The participants in the study consumed products containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus JB-1 - a type of bacterium that lives naturally in our digestive system.

As a result, they show fewer signs of stress, anxiety and depression than others who do not eat the same food.

During the experiments, the volunteers were placed in stressful situations. Participants who took the beneficial bacteria produced lower levels of the stress hormone corticosterone , the research team found.

Given the results, instead of an antidepressant, we can eat yogurt with probiotics , for example , says Dr. John Crayon, a researcher and neurologist at Cork University in Ireland. It certainly does not have the side effects of drugs, the specialist added.

Experts explain that the effectiveness of yogurt consumption on mental health depends on the strain of probiotic in the diet. Research by scientists on the usefulness of probiotics in the fight against depression continues.

The findings of the research team are published in the Bulletin of the National Academy of Sciences .
