Probiotics Help With Weight Loss After Bariatric Intervention

A large dose of probiotics can help patients with gastric bypass to lose even more weight.

A large dose of probiotics can help patients with gastric bypass to lose even more weight. Prof. John Morton of Stanford University, who presented the data at this year's Digestive Diseases Week in San Diego, aimed to improve gastrointestinal function in his patients. According to him, after such surgery, the growth of the intestinal flora is suppressed, and this affects the physiology of the intestine, as well as the general condition.

In patients with gastric bypass, he and his colleagues observed weight before, immediately after surgery, and three and six months later. 70% of weight loss was achieved with a probiotic diet, compared to an average of 66% without one.

Asked if yogurt should be consumed after bariatric intervention, Morton said it would not hurt, but 2.4 billion lactobacilli are too many to produce.
