Regular intake of probiotics can change the response of the immune system to plant pollen ...
With the beginning of spring and the flowering of flowers and trees, pollen allergies become more acute - the so-called hay fever, pollen asthma and pollen urticaria. According to allergists, with each passing year the number of people suffering from some kind of pollen allergy is growing like an avalanche.
Hay fever is expressed as allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis caused by pollen. Pollens are microscopic particles of stamen pollen of flowering plants. They often irritate the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes, causing runny nose, blockage and itching of the nose and eyes. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis increase in sunny, dry and windy weather and decrease in rainy weather.
Data from a study involving a small group of patients with allergic rhinitis show that daily intake of probiotics can alter the immune system's response to plant pollen. Prof. Claudio Nicoletti, head of the study, explains that the desired effect cannot be achieved quickly. However, he is pleased with the results, as a large percentage of allergy sufferers have a reduced immune response to pollen.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in which the effect of dairy consumption was monitored. Products containing lactobacilli have been taken for five months. After the experimental period, blood tests were performed showing a significant decrease in IgE levels. There is an increase in IgG antibodies, which have a protective role.
