Consumption of red meat twice a day increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in women with almost a third woman, reports the online edition of the Daily Mail, citing the results of a study by American experts.
According to the study, women who eat two servings of red meat or sausages every day are 30% more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease than women who eat only half a serving.
The conclusion is based on a study of 84,136 women between the ages of 30 and 55, which lasted from 1980 to 2006. All participants had to fill in questionnaires about their eating habits and the products they consumed most often.
During the 26-year period of the study, 2,210 of the participants suffered a cardiovascular accident, another 952 died of coronary heart disease.
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston have concluded that replacing red meat and sausages in some nut meals reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%. Eating fish instead of meat reduces vascular accidents by 24 percent and chicken - by 19 percent.
"The data from our study show that replacing red meat and sausages or reducing the amount of it has an extremely beneficial effect on health," explains Adam Bernstein of the research team.
However, complete avoidance of red meat is also not recommended, as they are a rich source of protein and iron.
Scientists point out that there is a huge difference in the nutritional value of fresh red meat and processed meat products and advise that the restriction of meat should be at the expense of sausages rich in preservatives, colors and salt.
