Sesame Allergy - One Of The Most Common Food Allergies

Recent studies show that sesame allergy is an extremely common allergy worldwide

Researchers at the University of Chicago are analyzing a national study with more than 50,000 participants. Analyzes reveal that sesame allergies affect more than 1 million adults and children in the United States alone. This type of food allergy can occur both at an early age and in adulthood.

From this point of view, it differs from other types of food allergies such as allergies to milk, eggs, which are usually found in very early childhood and around puberty begin to disappear.

The study is the first of its kind, which aims to determine the number of people affected by this allergy.

Sesame seeds are obtained from the plant Sesamum indicum. The food industry uses sesame seeds raw or roasted, and sesame oil is also extracted from them. Sesame seeds are used in the preparation of many pastries such as bread, rolls, pretzels, pretzels, cakes, etc.

Sesame seeds are currently considered a strong allergen , along with milk, eggs, fish, peanuts, soy, seafood, etc. For this reason, in many countries (including European Union countries) food producers are required to describe the sesame content on the label.

Symptoms of food allergy . Having an allergy to a certain food means living in constant tension, that the accidental consumption of the wrong food can lead to a severe allergic reaction. There is currently no cure for food allergies, so the only way to be safe is to avoid foods that provoke allergies.

An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system reacts too violently to certain proteins in food or other allergens.

Sesame allergy, like most food allergies, is very dramatic - swelling of the face, hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing, shock , even death.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is an antibody that recognizes allergens and signals the release of pro-inflammatory molecules. These molecules cause symptoms that usually affect the skin, nose, throat and lungs.

Food allergies are serious conditions. It is for this reason that new rules have been imposed, according to which food producers are obliged to describe the most common allergens in the food they produce.
