Frequent intake of spices such as turmeric and cinnamon significantly reduces the body's negative response to eating fatty foods, say researchers from Penn State University, USA.
Prof. Sheila West, head of the study, explains that when you eat very fatty foods, your blood becomes saturated with triglycerides . If this happens too often, and triglycerides are elevated, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases dramatically.
Compared to a dish without spices, containing turmeric or cinnamon contributes to the reduction of triglycerides in the blood by more than 30%.
If more and more spices such as rosemary, oregano, black pepper, garlic powder and hot pepper are added, a potent mixture of antioxidants is obtained, which increases the body's total antioxidant activity by more than 13% and the insulin response by about 20%.
According to Prof. West, the antioxidant cocktail contained in a few pinches of spices plays an important role in reducing the oxidative stress that causes cardiovascular disease, diabetes and arthritis.
However, more than two teaspoons of spices per dish should be avoided, especially if it is spicy, because "overdose" can not only spoil the taste of food, but also lead to gastrointestinal disorders and ulcers .
