Strawberries are a berry rich in vitamins B and C, it contains folic acid, iron, copper, iodine, zinc. This miracle berry aids digestion, strengthens the cardiovascular system, and even has temperature-lowering properties due to the content of salicylic acid, which is also present in aspirin. Strawberry strengthens the immune system, is an excellent antidepressant and a strong natural aphrodisiac.
The berries of a good strawberry are always bright red, shiny, elastic, without dents or cuts. Be sure to pay attention to the presence of spoiled berries: if you find at least one such berry in a container, know that it is better not to buy such strawberries, since it will be stored for a minimum amount of time, moreover, there may be more such berries in the container. If it happened that you found a spoiled berry after purchase, then remove it from the general container so as not to contribute to the decay of the rest. Then wash good strawberries in a mixture of water and vinegar. This procedure will help remove bacteria from the surface of the berries and keep them fresh for longer than usual.
The aroma of strawberries should be light, sweet. If the strawberry has no smell, then it is not natural. The stalk of a fresh berry is always bright green. If the tail of the strawberry wilted - this is a sign that the berries are no longer the first freshness. Choose medium-sized strawberries, often large berries are watery and unsweetened.
If you buy homemade strawberries, pay attention to the container in which it is stored: the walls should not be in strawberry juice or strawberry pulp - this indicates that the berries are not fresh. Taste the berry, so you will know its real taste. Sometimes an artificial aroma comes from the berries (for example, in winter, strawberries smell very fragrant, but taste like plastic).
It is best to store strawberries in boxes made of durable cardboard or wooden boxes with holes for ventilation. In no case do not store strawberries in a plastic container, especially with a closed lid (the berries must "breathe"). Strawberries are highly perishable, so don't buy large quantities of berries if you're not going to cook anything with them. Store fresh berries in the refrigerator for no more than 2 days and do not wash, otherwise the strawberries will leak and begin to rot. The optimum temperature for storing strawberries should not exceed 20 degrees Celsius.
Wash the berries before eating, otherwise they will flow, lose their former appearance and, accordingly, taste. To keep strawberries in the refrigerator for as long as possible, lay dry strawberries in a single layer on a flat plate and cover with cling film.
Strawberries can be frozen, so you keep all the nutrients and can enjoy the berries for 10 months. In order for your berries not to spread after defrosting, send strong and dry berries to the freezer. In the case of not the most attractive berries - puree and freeze strawberries, then add to cocktails, cereals, pies. You can also sprinkle the berries with sugar (for 1 kilogram of strawberries - 200 grams of sugar), so when you defrost you will get a delicious strawberry syrup. Usually chopped berries are stored in sugar.
Save strawberries in sugar syrup. Strawberries in sugar syrup are very similar to jam. You will need 800 grams of strawberries, 400 grams of sugar and 3 cups of water. Rinse the strawberries and put them in boiling water for 45 seconds. Arrange the berries in sterilized jars and pour boiling water and sugar syrup over. Close jars with lids and store in a dark, cool place.
