Experiments by researchers confirm the ability of apples to prevent aging - this occurs due to the reduction of oxidative stress to which the cells of the body are exposed.

Apples are saturated with phenolic compounds, flavonoids, which normalize the processes of cellular activity regulation and protect body cells from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. According to a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Annurca apples, popular in southern Italy, are able to slow down aging due to a particularly high concentration of phenolic compounds. Their powerful antiaging and antioxidant effects were tested in three experiments.

In particular, the scientists found that apple polyphenols significantly extended the average lifespan of fruit flies, and also preserved the ability to move in the oldest insects

"Apple polyphenols actually changed the levels of many biochemical substances, which are markers of age-related deterioration and approaching death," the publication states the conclusion of experts.

According to them, people who stop smoking, drink alcohol and start following a diet with high levels of flavonoids, similar to apple, can count on a longer active life without the negative changes associated with aging.

"Flavonoids are found in many plant foods, including apples, and help the body function more efficiently - these compounds protect it from the harmful effects of various toxins and stressors. They are powerful antioxidants-absorbers of free radicals that damage the integrity of cells, which contributes to inflammation, early aging, susceptibility to heart disease, and oncology," say scientists.

Other health benefits of apples:

  • They provide the body with a large amount of vitamins and minerals: an average fruit can provide up to 14 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, 6 percent of potassium, and 5 percent of the very important vitamin K.
  • Contribute to weight loss: this effect is provided by the high content of fiber and water.
  • Cholesterol concentration is reduced: the soluble fiber of apples effectively cleans blood vessels of it.
  • Lower blood pressure. This is facilitated by the polyphenol epicatechin contained in apples.
  • Improves the condition of the intestines. In addition to soluble fiber, they contain pectin, which acts as a prebiotic that feeds beneficial intestinal bacteria. This feature of apples also helps to prolong the youth of the body, delaying the onset of obvious aging.
