These Foods Are Not Harmless

Solanine, amygdalin and many other unpleasant surprises can be hidden in our plate.

We have tried to put on the table only fresh, clean and well-prepared food. And yet we can still be poisoned and experience complaints of nausea and diarrhea to paralysis. For this to happen, we do not need to eat food contaminated with chemicals and microbes, nor poisonous mushrooms and plants. There are some completely harmless foods that, however, under certain conditions can endanger our health. Here are some of them:

  • Sprouted potatoes - softened, green and especially sprouted potatoes are not just devoid of commercial appearance. They can cause mild to severe symptoms due to the solanine in them.
Solanine is a glycoalkaloid and is found not only in potatoes but also in tomatoes, eggplant and other plants. It has pesticidal properties and is a natural protection of these crops against insects and other pests. If the potatoes sit in the sun, its production increases. Solanine has a hemolytic effect, complaints appear 1 to 12 hours after consumption and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, paralysis. The fatal dose is high and rarely reached.

  • Mussels - away from dirty sea water and food allergies, they have another danger.

They feed on plankton. When the sea water is red, it is best to avoid freshly caught mussels. Its color is due to the development of plankton with neurotoxic effects, which also served as food.

  • Fish - completely edible at any time, under certain conditions bind toxins
There is such a danger in our country from barbel and catfish and their caviar. During spawning, they produce biotoxins.

  • Bitter apricot and almond nuts - contain amygdalin, which in hydrolysis in our body releases the poison hydrogen cyanide .
We can get headaches and nausea to cyanosis and loss of consciousness. The fatal dose is high, but why take the risk?
