Greek study shows that eating foods rich in vitamin D even in sufficient sunlight is a guarantee of good cardiovascular health in men

Foods rich in vitamin D are good for cardiovascular health , according to a long-term Greek study. It included 3,042 people, giving detailed information about the food they had consumed for 10 years, from 2001 to 2012. The study was conducted by the University of Athens and involved volunteers from the Greek capital and the surrounding area. It is published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

The team's findings show that those who often consume sun-rich foods such as oily fish, eggs, milk and dairy products have the lowest risk of developing cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke. This is especially true for men. The results in women show that it is useful for them to adhere to a consumption of these foods between the maximum possible and moderate.

There is a 12% risk of cardiovascular events in men and 11% in women in the group with maximum consumption of fatty fish, eggs and dairy products, and the number in men is twice lower than in the group rarely consuming vitamin-rich products. The same risk for infrequent eaters is 24% for men and 14% for women. In moderate such consumption the following results are noted: 17% for men and 10% for women.

The researchers note that such a beneficial effect has not been found when taking vitamin D supplements so far, which leads them to think that its natural sources are the more favorable form for heart health.

Vitamin D is naturally synthesized by the body under the influence of sunlight, a factor that is equally valid in both sexes.

What are foods rich in vitamin D?

  • Oily fish - for example tuna, mackerel, salmon;
  • Vitamin D-enriched foods such as dairy products, soy milk, whole grain snacks, orange juice;
  • Veal liver,
  • Cheese and yellow cheese,
  • Egg yolk.

The daily needs for vitamin D are 600 international units, and in adults over 70 years they are increased and reach 800 IU.

Vitamin D is extremely valuable for the effective absorption of calcium from bones and the prevention of osteoporosis.
The vitamin also creates mood, sun smiles and strengthens immunity.
