Eating during a cold or flu is more important than ever. It is essential for relieving some symptoms and healing faster .

 

1. Chicken soup


Chicken soup is a food that relieves even the most common cold. This is an easy way to get the vitamins, minerals, calories and proteins that the body needs when it is sick. The soup is also a source of fluids and electrolytes needed for hydration. With fever symptoms, the body needs extra fluids. Chicken also contains the amino acid cysteine , which has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

 

2. Garlic

Garlic is a remedy with antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects. It is a natural antibiotic that stimulates the immune system and reduces the incidence of flu and colds. One study found that people who took garlic were less likely to get sick. 

 

3. Some fruits

Fruits are rich in vitamins , minerals and fiber that support the body and the immune system. Those with red, blue or purple color such as strawberries, blueberries and blackberries contain anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Fruits high in anthocyanins can prevent viruses and bacteria. In particular, pomegranates have antibacterial and antiviral effects that prevent the development of even salmonella .

Coconut water is a drink that can be consumed when a person is ill. It has a sweet taste and according to research it provides extra fluids needed for hydration . Coconut water contains antioxidants that improve blood sugar control, which is important for faster healing.

 

5. Hot tea

Just like chicken soup, hot tea helps clear the airways. Consuming tea throughout the day helps to hydrate the body. Tea contains polyphenols , which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Tannins are a type of polyphenol found in tea, with antibacterial and antiviral properties.

 

6. Honey

Honey has antibacterial effects and stimulates the functions of the immune system. Honey is an effective food especially for sore throats caused by a bacterial infection . To prepare a moisturizing and soothing drink, you can combine half a teaspoon of honey with a glass of warm milk or tea.

 

7. Ginger

Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory effects. It is effective in relieving nausea associated with pregnancy. Apart from relieving the symptoms of nausea and vomiting, ginger is one of the best foods when a person is ill. It has antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-cancer properties. This makes it an effective remedy for colds, viruses and infections.

 

8. Spicy foods

Spicy foods such as cayenne pepper contain capsaicin, which is used to relieve pain. Capsaicin reduces nasal secretions , which facilitates breathing. A study claims that it improves momentary and chronic cough. Most of the spicy foods help clear the sinuses, but it should be noted that people who have an upset stomach should avoid them because they can cause bloating, pain and nausea.
