Following a Mediterranean diet helps improve overall well-being , according to a four-year study of 11,000 students. 

 
Researchers from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Navarre in Spain have found that those who follow the Mediterranean diet have a higher quality of life , good mental and physical health.
 
Regular consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, seafood, olive oil and nuts has been shown to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases. 
 
However, it is not yet clear how food affects mental and physical health and quality of life.
 
According to the food pyramid created by experts, cereals, fruits and vegetables should not be missing in the main meals. The recommendations also include a daily intake of 2 liters of water .
 
In the diet, olive oil is the main source of fat, moderate consumption of wine, consumption of fish, lean meat, eggs is recommended. 
 
According to the diet, sugar, pastries, cakes and sweetened beverages should be consumed only occasionally and in small quantities.
 
The study was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition .
