Important in the treatment of cancer is a complete and healthy diet and a balanced diet.
Chemotherapy is a major method of treating cancer that uses one or more drugs to fight cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy causes unpleasant consequences for the patient, which may include - dry mouth, changes in taste, nausea, fatigue and malaise.
Important in the treatment of cancer is a complete and healthy diet and a balanced diet. Foods that are light for the stomach are the best option. Foods that are helpful to consume during chemotherapy include:
Oatmeal provides numerous nutrients that can help the body during chemotherapy. It contains enough carbohydrates, proteins and antioxidants, as well as more healthy fats than most cereals. Oatmeal also helps the gut due to the presence of beta glucans, a type of water-soluble fiber that feeds the good bacteria in the gut.
The neutral taste and creamy texture of oatmeal are especially suitable in the presence of side effects from chemotherapy, such as - dry mouth, nausea or sores in the mouth. Oatmeal can be garnished with berries, honey or nuts. Fruits, maple syrup and nuts are common additions to oatmeal, although the dish can be seasoned with savory, prepared with avocado or eggs.
In the absence of appetite, avocados can provide the necessary calories and nutrients. Avocados are a soft, green fruit and are especially rich in healthy monounsaturated fats , which can help lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels while increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. In addition, avocados contain fiber that supports beneficial bacteria in the intestinal microflora. Avocado is a filling, universal and light food and is a very good option for dry mouth, constipation, cold sores or weight loss.
Fatigue is a common side effect of chemotherapy. Eggs can help with fatigue due to their rich content of protein and fat . While fat provides the body with energy, protein helps maintain and build muscle mass, which is especially important during chemotherapy.
The change in taste is a common effect during chemotherapy, and the water usually feels different in taste from the patient. In these cases, broth (vegetable, meat, fish or mushrooms) is a good alternative for keeping the body hydrated. During the process of boiling the broth, electrolytes are released into the liquid. They are charged particles that include substances such as sodium, potassium , chloride and calcium and help maintain the proper functioning of the body.
Consumption of broth can be helpful in the loss of electrolytes through vomiting, sweating or diarrhea.
Chicken, tofu or vegetables can be added to the broth. Passing this mixture can help it to be taken more easily in the presence of sores in the patient's mouth. To add more nutrients to the broth, especially for dry mouth or poor appetite, you can add a spoonful of tasteless protein powder, such as collagen powder .
However, when experiencing nausea or vomiting, it is good for the broth to be clean and not saturated with many ingredients, and it is necessary to drink it slowly. The broth is suitable in such cases, as its lack of fiber makes it easier to digest.
Nuts such as almonds and cashews are easily eaten on the go when the patient is away from home, but are also high in protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Almonds are a rich source of manganese and honey.
These minerals form superoxide dismutase , one of the most powerful and important antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants help fight free radicals that damage the body's cells.
However, nuts may not be easy for the patient to eat if he has cold sores in his mouth. In these cases, walnut oils can be consumed instead.
Like nuts, pumpkin seeds are suitable for consumption outside the home. They are rich in fats, proteins and antioxidants such as vitamin E , which can help fight inflammation. Pumpkin seeds also supply iron.
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables
Cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, are rich in trace elements and vitamins. In particular, broccoli offers a significant amount of vitamin C , which is vital for the immune system.
Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli contain sulforaphane , a plant compound believed to improve brain health. Studies show that sulforaphane can have a positive effect on brain health by reducing inflammation and protecting healthy cells from damage, which is especially important in chemotherapy.
Eating two servings of fish a week is helpful in chemotherapy. Oily fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, etc.) provides protein and omega-3 fatty acids .
Omega-3 fatty acids are important because they maintain brain health and have anti-inflammatory properties. Consumption of large amounts of protein and healthy foods rich in fats such as fish helps to avoid unhealthy weight loss during treatment.
Salmon and herring are a good source of vitamin D , which is needed for immunity and bone health.
