The food we eat every day at work is rich in salt and fast carbohydrates and poor in nutrients, according to a large American study. This shows the lack of access to healthy food in the workplace, as well as the policy of companies to ensure the ability to maintain healthy eating habits among employees, said researchers from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States.
The study is the first of its kind in the United States on such a scale, and data from it were presented at the American Nutrition Society's annual conference in Boston, which ended on June 12.
To this end, the research team analyzed the nutrition of 5,222 employees, and the focus of their questions was on the type of products and beverages they buy from shops, cafeterias and restaurants in the workplace, including those offered free of charge by employers . As a result of this meal, employees consume 1000 calories more than necessary per week, even when the food is provided by employees' employers free of charge.
When people spend more than half of their time at work, they are forced to eat unhealthy foods and empty calories without nutritional value, the researchers emphasize, and suggest that companies start implementing programs that maintain employee health and encourage healthy eating habits. Restaurants, buffets and workplace machines should provide healthier product choices.
