Cabbage and broccoli are a source of extremely healthy phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. That is why nutritionists recommend that vegetables be present in our menu every day.
Cabbage has a high nutritional value and has a protective effect against some cancers, studies have found. Thanks to the natural compounds in its composition, it has a positive effect on the body, namely a variety of antioxidants that interfere with oxidative and inflammatory processes in cells.
Most antioxidants are found in broccoli and cauliflower, but the leaves of "ordinary" cabbage have enough useful components. In addition to anti-cancer functions, all types of cabbage have an immune-boosting effect.
Broccoli contains 2 times more vitamin C than oranges and is rich in calcium, as well as fiber, which facilitates the activity of the stomach.
Recently, experts have found that broccoli is a source of the substance sulforaphane, which has the ability to protect skin cells from UV rays. Its role is to increase the level of a protective enzyme in these cells. Although it takes days for it to take place, even after washing off the rubbed substance, it still works.
For the purposes of the study, an experiment was performed with 16 volunteers exposed to UV rays, after which the degree of redness was measured. Areas with rubbed sulforaphane and without were compared. It turns out that it reduces the degree of erythema to 83%, but still to varying degrees in different people. Scientists attribute this difference to the influence of genetic factors. However, a number of studies in this area are still pending.
