A morning cup of coffee or green tea can give more than a bounce and freshness - it can protect caffeine drinkers from stroke, according to a new study conducted by the National Center for Cerebral and Cardiovascular Research in Japan.
Research shows that people who drink green tea or coffee are less likely to have a heart attack than those who rarely or never use tonics. According to scientists, previous research in this area is incomplete or inconsistent , which encourages them to get serious about the topic.
To this end, the researchers collected data on 93,269 people aged 45-74 over a period of 13 years. Analysis of the data shows that one cup of coffee in the morning reduces the risk of stroke by 20% compared to infrequent consumption or complete abstinence. Participants who drank 2-3 cups of green tea a day had a 14% lower risk of stroke , and participants who drank 4 or more cups had a 20% lower risk .
According to Dr. Ralph Sako, former president of the American Heart Association , it is still unclear why coffee and tea reduce the risk of stroke. He states that it is not known whether the benefits are due to the caffeine they contain, other ingredients or a combination of these ingredients and caffeine.
While the results show that both drinks reduce the risk of stroke, no such dependence has been found for heart attacks . This contradicts previous studies that have shown that moderate consumption reduces the risk.
Coffee and tea, by themselves, are insufficient protection against strokes and cardiovascular disease. The best prevention is to lead a healthy lifestyle - a balanced diet combined with moderate amounts of physical activity.
It is also important not to overdose on these drinks , as high amounts of caffeine can cause palpitations , nausea, nervousness, trembling hands and more.
