E 142 or Green S is a food additive that belongs to the dyes used to give green color to products. This is a synthetic substance - sodium salt, which is extracted from coal tar. It is a powder or granules with a rich dark green color. The additive is heat-resistant - withstands temperatures up to 150ºC, soluble in all liquids, without oils.

Use

E 142 can be found on the labels of semi-finished soups, ice creams, spices, semi-finished products, soft drinks, minced fish, pickles, smoked fish, processed cheeses; used in the manufacture of paints for Easter eggs. Apart from the food industry, the substance is also used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, also for dyeing silk and wool.

Human effects:

Green S is officially banned in Japan, Norway, USA, Canada. Products containing the substance should not be given to children to avoid hyperactivity. In moderation, E 142 does not harm the body, but in excess it can cause allergic reactions and the risk of cancer.
