Characteristic

Ammonium alginate is a stabilizer that is used to preserve the consistency of the product and is able to increase its viscosity. E 403 is a granule or powder with a faint odor of ammonia. In its natural form it is part of alginic acid. It is separated from seaweed as kelp by treating it with ammonia solution. The resulting substance may contain impurities (permissible amount) of seawater and algae.

Use

Food additive E 403 is used as a thickener, gelling agent; finds application in the production of soluble capsules and as a moisturizer.

Ammonium alginate can be found in: various desserts, processed cheeses, home-made cheeses, some sauces, canned vegetables, meat and mushrooms, bakery products, ice cream.

Impact on humans

The permissible daily dose of the supplement is not more than 10 g / kg. The use of ammonium alginate is permitted only in combination with other similar alginates. They are used in pharmacology in the preparation of antacids.

E 403 is able to remove heavy metals such as mercury and lead from the body. The main and useful properties of sea kelp are explained by the presence of alginic acid in its composition.

Given the inability of alginates to be absorbed by people with gastric diseases, they should be careful when using products containing the substance.

In the human body, the acid formed by alginates is not absorbed, but may decompose slightly in the existing intestinal microflora.

Ammonium alginate is not an allergen, in direct contact with the skin does not cause irritation.
