Potassium sulphate is found in nature in potassium deposits and in saltwater lakes. The substance was discovered in the 14th century. It is a white or colorless crystal or a crystalline powder with a specific bitter-salty taste. The additive dissolves well in water, and practically does not dissolve in ethanol and concentrated alkaline solutions. Potassium sulfate is found in a number of products: beets, wheat germ oil, seaweed, almonds, cheese, spinach, lean beef, oranges, lemons, bananas and fresh green leafy vegetables.
The additive E 515 is used in the food industry mainly as a salt substitute. In addition, potassium sulfate acts as a regulator of acidity in beverages, a nutrient medium in the preparation of yeast with a liquid consistency, also in rye yeast and as a source of minerals.
In agriculture it is used as a valuable fertilizer for podzolic soils poor in potassium or other minerals. It is also used in the production of glass and colorants. In analytical chemistry, the substance is used in the conversion of sparingly soluble chemical compounds into easily soluble ones.
Potassium sulfate is needed by the human body as a supplier of oxygen to cells. It is responsible for a person's energy balance. Insufficient content of E 515 is possible: hair loss, dry skin, dandruff, exhaustion. However, care must be taken with the substance. Potassium sulphate in the eyes leads to inflammation and irritation. Irritating to skin. If the food contains too much of the substance, it is very possible the possibility of stomach upset and general irritation of the entire digestive tract. Rarely, continuous use of the supplement is a cause of poisoning. Inhalation threatens irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract.
