Magnesium sulfate is an inorganic substance. It is a salt of sulfuric acid and magnesium. E 518 is a white powder with a pronounced bitter taste, dissolves well in glycerin and water. In nature, epsomite and kieserite are found in the minerals.
E 518 is used in the food industry as a salt substitute either alone or in combination with some other sulphates. Magnesium sulfate is a good nutrient base for yeast. The additive is often used in canned vegetables to prevent them from softening.
Apart from the food industry, it is also used in medicine, in particular in the treatment of obesity. E 518 is a strong saline, laxative; the substance has antispasmodic and choleretic properties. It is also used in the pulp and paper, textile and chemical industries.
There are no official contraindications to the use of magnesium sulfate. There is no information about the adverse effects of the additive E 518 on the human body. The use of the substance as a salt substitute is not limited.
