Cyclamic acid and its sodium, potassium and calcium salts are white crystalline powders. The substance has no odor, has a pronounced sweet taste, which is 30-50 times sweeter than sugar. If the concentration of the additive is high, a metallic taste is clearly felt. Cyclamic acid and its salts are resistant to heat and hydrolysis. The substance is characterized by a high degree of solubility in water and medium in alcohols, does not dissolve in fatty solvents. E 952 is obtained by synthesis of amidosulfonic acid and cyclohexylamine.
In the food industry, the additive is mainly used in combination with other sweeteners. It is used in the preparation of desserts, ice cream, fruit and vegetable products without sugar or with reduced calories, soft and low-alcohol beverages, beer, wine and more. The food supplement is part of low-calorie confectionery, canned fruits, jam, jams, marmalades, chewing gum and more. In pharmacy it is used for making syrups and cough tablets, vitamin and mineral complexes. In cosmetics E 952 can be contained in lipsticks and lip glosses.
The amount of cyclamic acid, which is considered harmless to the human body, is 10 mg per kilogram of body weight. Studies have shown that exceeding this dose can lead to the development of malignant neoplasms. In addition, products containing the supplement E 952 should not be consumed by pregnant women, especially during the first months of pregnancy, because the substance has a teratogenic effect. This leads to a ban on the use of the additive in the United States, Japan, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, Russia, Indonesia. At the same time, the WHO recognizes the food additive E 952 as safe, provided that the requirements for its use are met.
