Quillaia extract is a light brown powder with a pink tinge, it can also be in the form of an aqueous solution. The taste is astringent and sharp. The additive dissolves well in water. In nature, it is found in the bark of quilaia and in some other trees of the family Rosaceae. The substance is obtained by aqueous extraction of the layer adjacent to the bark.

Use

In the food industry E 999 can be used as an emulsifier in the production of carbonated flavored soft drinks, beer. The additive is also a foaming agent in the preparation of confectionery containing sugar, in particular halva and ice cream. In bread production, quilaia extract is used as a moisturizer for finished products. Thanks to the additive, the shelf life of the products is significantly extended. In medicine, the substance is often included in cough medicines because it has an expectorant effect. The food supplement is used as an emulsifier in the preparation of toothpastes, medical shampoos, hair conditioners.

Impact on humans

Quilia extract is believed to be harmless to humans. It is known that the  food supplement has a number of useful properties used in human and veterinary medicine. At the same time, there is information that regular intake of the substance through food can adversely affect the body, for example: irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, seizures, liver damage, respiratory problems, spasms. E 999 is approved for use in most countries around the world.
