Consumption of energy drinks can lead to an increase in blood pressure levels , according to a new study.
The popularity of these drinks among young people is growing, and with it the concern of scientists for the health of future generations.
For the purpose of the study, 25 people aged between 19 and 40 years were observed. Before it started, their blood pressure levels and heart rate were measured . Participants receive two types of drinks - a commercial energy drink and a placebo.
Thirty minutes after consuming their drink, the participants' blood pressure and heart rate were measured and compared again.
Blood pressure levels were found to double between participants who consumed the energy drink compared to those who drank placebo. The energy drink contains more than 160 mg of caffeine , which is the average amount of a cup of coffee.
Caffeine is a natural stimulant that can directly affect heart rate and blood pressure. Excessive consumption and prolonged stimulation can lead to arrhythmia and other heart disorders .
The researchers added that people who do not normally consume caffeine may have an even higher risk and should be careful when consuming energy drinks.
The results of the study were presented at the Annual Meeting of Scientists from the American College of Cardiology in San Diego, USA, on March 14.
