Before each New Year, skillful hostesses create culinary masterpieces from simple, well-known dishes. Someone surprises guests with New Year's table setting, someone pleases with new dishes in the festive menu, and someone strikes the imagination with a non-trivial serving of well-known snacks.

Herring under a fur coat is probably one of those simple and ingenious solutions of Russian cuisine, which is easy and inexpensive to prepare. And this appetizer with fish is incredibly tasty.

This salad has long become a New Year's classic and is firmly entrenched in the Christmas menu. But few people know that for the first time a herring under a fur coat was served by the Russian chef Aristarkh back in 1919. So in the coming 2019, the universal favorite will turn 100 years old! Congratulations!

To celebrate this special date, we invite you to take a fresh look at how this dish is prepared and served.

1. Herring in a fur coat - rolls

To prepare herring in the form of New Year's rolls, you will need:

nori sheets - 2 pcs.; herring - 150 g; boiled potatoes - 1 pc.; boiled carrots - 2 pcs.; boiled beets - 1 pc.; granular mustard - 1 tsp; mayonnaise - to taste; salt, pepper - to taste.

Mat and cling film as inventory.

First, grate boiled vegetables on a coarse grater. Lay out the mat, cover with cling film on top. Distribute the grated beets evenly, cover with a thin layer of mayonnaise on top. Then do the same with the grated carrots. Spread the potatoes in the next layer. Slices of herring are laid out on potatoes. Place a few mustard seeds on each slice of fish. To taste, the filling can be varied with white or chopped onions.

Using a mat, gently roll the filling into a roll, pressing down gently on the sides. Wrap the resulting roll in cling film and leave in the refrigerator for several hours to take shape. Before serving, cut the roll into pieces, 2-3 cm long, and serve to the table, garnished with lettuce and red tomato slices.

2. Herring under a fur coat in the form of a turret

For such an original design, you will additionally need a serving ring. You can buy it in a store, or you can make it yourself from improvised materials, after deciding what the proportions will be.

Ingredients:

medium herring - 1 pc.; eggs - 2 pcs.; carrots - 1 pc.; mayonnaise - 3 tbsp. l.; potatoes - 2 pcs.; red caviar - 2 tbsp. l. (for decoration); parsley - to taste (for decoration); salt, pepper - to taste.

Boil vegetables and eggs, peel and grate. We put a serving ring on a plate and begin to lay out the boiled vegetables in layers, each time smearing the layers with mayonnaise.

Put the grated potatoes in the first layer and it is he who will give your dish stability. Then alternately lay out layers of herring, cut into small pieces, grated carrots and eggs. We generously grease the top layer with mayonnaise and distribute a thin layer of the game. Leave the salad in the ring for another 15-20 minutes to take shape. Voila, an exquisite herring under a fur coat with caviar decoration is ready!

3. Cake-salad "Herring under a fur coat"

This dish claims to take center stage on the festive table. And the best part is that it's so easy to make.

For cooking you will need:

carrots - 3 pcs.; beets - 4 pcs. (3 beets for salad and 1 beet for decoration); potatoes - 3 pcs.; onion - 2 pcs.; eggs - 3 pcs.; herring - 1 pc.; mayonnaise - to taste; salt, ground black pepper - to taste.

To shape the salad, find or make three serving rings with a diameter of 16 cm, 12 cm and 8 cm.

Vegetables and eggs need to be boiled and peeled. Cut all ingredients into small cubes. We put the first ring with a diameter of 16 cm on the plate. We put the herring. Lubricate with mayonnaise. Next, alternately stack onions, potatoes, beets and carrots. Coat each layer with mayonnaise. The first level of our miracle salad is ready.

Then, in the center of the top layer, we install the next serving ring with a diameter of 12 cm. We put all the products in the already familiar sequence, not forgetting to coat each layer with mayonnaise. We install the smallest ring and form the third level.

When all three layers of lettuce are stacked, put the plate in the refrigerator without removing the rings. The dish should get used to its new shape. In the meantime, let's work on the design. Cut the remaining beets into thin slices. Use a cookie cutter to cut out themed pieces to decorate the cake.

Try experimenting and using other products to decorate.
