Mushrooms are the most common mushrooms for consumption , they are easily available on the market, are affordable, have a pleasant taste and have a number of useful properties. They belong to the safe species, they are used to prepare many dishes, they can be eaten even raw, without any heat treatment.

In order to preserve the freshness of the mushrooms for a long time , it is necessary to store them properly. To do this, we need to know how.

Preparation of mushrooms for storage

Mushrooms last longer and do not darken if not washed at all, excluding any contact with water. The durability of already washed decreases several times. And more:

  • cut the stumps;
  • thoroughly clean the hat from dirt by barely touching it with a knife;
  • inspect the mushrooms well on all sides and cut out unhealthy areas, if any;
  • wipe the soiled mushrooms only with a soft dry cloth.

Storage methods

  • In the refrigerator

Unpacked, left on the middle shelf in the refrigerator, mushrooms last up to three days. The temperature in it should be between 0 and 2 degrees. During prolonged storage without packaging, the mushrooms lose their moisture, their surface darkens and becomes tasteless.

If pre-cleaned mushrooms are placed in a plastic container or plastic bag, they retain their properties for a week. It is important to periodically ensure that oxygen enters the package / container, because otherwise condensation will contribute to spoilage and decay of the product.

You can put the mushrooms in a row in the vegetable compartment in the refrigerator. Cover with cotton cloth or paper. This will keep them fresh for up to 5 days.

  • In the refrigerator

If you freeze the mushrooms, their shelf life increases significantly. Before that, prepare them in the ways described above. Place them in tightly closed containers or packages that tie tightly.

At minus 18 degrees the mushrooms are preserved for a whole month. They do not need to be re-frozen, so it is good to pack quantities that you will use at once.

  • In a cold room

If you choose this option, know that the mushrooms will be edible for a maximum of 12 hours. Put them in an enameled wide container or in a plastic bucket. Store in the cold - in a cellar or basement, for example.

In the next part we will talk about the storage of mushrooms after heat treatment.
