How To Descale A Kettle: 7 Ways

The quality of modern tap water leaves much to be desired. It is rich in impurities, among which there are many salts that settle on the walls of dishes. This problem is especially true for kettles, both electric and ordinary. And of course it is unwise to buy a new one every time a plaque appears. It is much easier to get rid of fossilized sediments. We will look at different ways to clean the kettle from scale.

1. Citric acid

Citric acid can be used to clean any kettles. The tool is quite effective, the result is visible almost immediately. Depending on the size of the kettle, add citric acid (2 tablespoons per 1 liter) and fill it with water. Bring to a boil and leave to boil for 15 minutes. Then pour out the water and repeat the procedure if necessary, if your case is already quite advanced. Usually 2 times is enough even with large volumes of deposits, but you can repeat 3-4 times. For the last time, pour clean water and bring to a boil again, boil for a while, drain the liquid, rinse with running water. The kettle is clean and ready to use.

2. Soda

Cleaning with soda is suitable for enameled and metal teapots. The principle is the same as with citric acid, only the kettle with a solution of soda should boil for about half an hour. At the end of the procedure, it is better to rinse several times to remove all soda residue.

3. Potato and apple peels

Gentle method, effective in case of a small amount of scale. Potato peels should be washed off dirt before use. Then pour them into a kettle, pour water and boil. Let the peels, no matter potato or apple, boil for 5-10 minutes. Then close the kettle with a lid and leave for a few hours. And wash with any cleaning agent.

4. Pickle

Cucumber or tomato pickles do a good job with rust. The principle is the same as in the previously described methods: pour, boil, drain after cooling, and wash the kettle itself with dish detergent.

5. Table vinegar

5-6 tablespoons of 9% vinegar per 1 liter of water. A kettle with such a solution should boil well. Then you can rinse it and boil it again with clean water.

6. Soda

The most commonly used is Coca-Cola. It perfectly “eats” both rust and scale. Before use, the drink should be kept open for 40 minutes, all carbon dioxide should come out of it.

The scheme is similar to the previous ones: pour into a kettle and boil. Just remember this type of cleaning is not suitable for electric kettles.

7. Citric acid + vinegar + soda

This shock combination is able to cope even with many years of plaque. But it is also not suitable for electric kettles. But for any others, it may be the only chance to return to their original appearance.

First, boil a kettle with soda, add it at the rate of 1 tbsp. l. for 1 liter of water. After 10 minutes of boiling, drain the solution.

Pour fresh water, add citric acid, the percentage is similar to that used with soda. Bring to a boil and leave to boil for half an hour, then drain.

The next stage is a new portion of water, but now with 5-6 tbsp. vinegar to 1 liter of water. We also boil for about half an hour and pour it out.

We cool the kettle under cool running water, and with a sponge, preferably soft, we remove plaque, if something of it is still left on the walls.
