In the article we will tell:
The blood type diet has been popular for decades. Proponents of this diet suggest that your blood type determines which foods are best for your health.
Compliance with a suitable diet guarantees not only weight loss, but also overall health, and recommendations range from veganism for blood group 2 to meat paleo for group 1. But what are the details of the blood type diet, and is it based on any hard evidence?
The diet was popularized by naturopathic physician Peter D'Adamo in 1996. His book 4 Blood Types - 4 Ways of Life became a New York Times bestseller, sold millions of copies and is still hugely popular.
The author believed that in the process of evolution, the composition of human blood changed with a change in the type of food. The diet, the type of metabolism were formed under the prevailing type of social labor. These postulates formed the basis of the blood type diet.
In the diet of ancient people, depending on the type of activity, certain products prevailed: meat, plant foods, dairy products. Food dominance caused the formation of different blood types.
According to the authors, in order to maintain health, a person should eat foods that suit him. The rest should be excluded or minimized. Otherwise, metabolic processes fail, obesity develops.
There is logic in building such a health system. Long-term practice of its use notes the facts of improving the functionality of internal organs, losing excess weight.
People with the same blood type share common characteristics:
biorhythms;
food preferences;
level of stress resistance;
susceptibility to the same diseases.
In the course of analyzing the nutrition of people by blood group, 3 categories of products were identified:
Harmful. Split with the release of toxic substances - they negatively affect the body.
Neutral. Do not change the intensity of metabolic processes, but do not bring benefits.
Useful. They act only positively: they normalize metabolic processes, provide energy.
As such, the blood type diet divides all people into four types - "hunters" with blood type 0 (I), "farmers" with blood type A (II), "nomads" with type B (III) and a mixed type with type AB(IV).
"Hunters" - appeared about 1000 years ago in Africa. They ate only animal protein, had the first type of blood.
"Farmers" - received the second group, because. ate plant foods. It diversified the diet of ancient people with the advent of agriculture.
"Nomads" - became the owners of the third group. Mankind began to eat dairy products after the domestication of animals.
Mixed type - these are people with 4 groups. They appeared as a result of the union of farmers and nomads.
Basic recommendations are quite universal and suitable for any person healthy eating tips.
One of the central theories of the blood type diet has to do with proteins called lectins.
Lectins are a diverse family of proteins that can bind sugar molecules. These substances are considered antinutrients and can have negative effects on the intestinal mucosa.
According to the blood type diet theory, there are many lectins in the diet specifically designed for different blood types. It is claimed that eating the wrong types of lectins for one's blood type can lead to agglutination (clumping) of red blood cells.
In fact, there is evidence that a small percentage of the lectins in raw legumes may have blood type-specific agglutination activity.
For example, raw lima beans can only interact with red blood cells in people with blood type A. However, most agglutinating lectins react with all ABO blood types.
In other words, lectins in the diet are independent of blood type, with the exception of a few varieties of raw legumes.
This may not be true because most of the legume population is soaked and/or cooked before consumption, which destroys harmful lectins.
What do the studies say?Blood group research has advanced rapidly in the past few years and decades.
There is now strong evidence that people with certain blood types may have a higher or lower risk of certain diseases.
For example, people with type I blood have a lower risk of heart disease but a higher risk of stomach ulcers.
However, there are no studies showing that this has anything to do with diet.
In a large observational study of 1,455 young adults, eating a type A diet (lots of fruits and vegetables) was associated with better health outcomes. But this effect was seen in everyone on the Type A diet, not just people with Type A blood.
One of the studies that found a link between blood types and food allergies actually contradicted blood type dietary recommendations.
In an analysis of all available scientific papers (about one and a half thousand studies) on the relationship between blood type and health, only 16 studies partially confirmed that dieting according to blood type can somehow affect the body. The remaining hundreds of studies have found no relationship between health, nutrition, and blood type.

"Enzyme Deficiency: Symptoms and Treatment" MoreIt is also important that at the moment there is not a single scientific study proving the direct impact of adherence to a blood type diet with real weight loss or with improved health. Interestingly, even the author himself speaks very carefully about the effect of his diet on weight loss and fat burning, mentioning modest figures of 3-4 kg.
Thus, current research suggests that, despite the presence of some logic in the theoretical basis of the diet by blood type, it is impossible to give an unambiguous and universal recommendation for food intake solely on a single metabolic characteristic.
In fact, such a recommendation simply will not take into account the enzymatic and endocrine activity of a particular person.
The author of the diet, Peter D'Adamo, claims that his theory is based on centuries-old observations of the Japanese, linking temperament and a certain blood type.
There are no links to sources of information or any specific research in his books, just as nothing is said about the basis on which the author divides specific products into useful and harmful.
It should also be noted that Peter D'Adamo is not a practicing doctor and does not hold any scientific degrees. In simple terms, the theory of the relationship between diet and blood type is solely his private opinion, based on his own comparison of facts, but not on any scientific data.
So, even if you follow one of these diets and your health improves, it doesn't necessarily mean it has something to do with your blood type.
Maybe the reason for the health benefits is simply that you are eating healthier foods than you used to. After all, all 4 types of diets are based on real, healthy food and are a huge improvement over the standard Western diet of processed unhealthy foods.
The dietary principles of nutrition by blood types are suitable for all people who strive to lead a healthy lifestyle and have no contraindications for health reasons. The mode is designed for a long period (2-6 months) and has a lasting effect. The diet is balanced, it contains all the nutrients in the optimal ratio.
Main advantages:
balance;
softness;
a large selection of useful products, a lot of neutral ones;
infrequent use of prohibited foods is acceptable.
Cons of the weight loss system by blood type:
no guarantee of weight loss;
you need to take into account the state of the digestive system, control cholesterol levels;
it is necessary to change taste preferences;
high risk of relapse due to prolonged food restriction;
the nutrition system is based on a hypothesis, has no scientific basis.
A significant disadvantage of the diet is a large list of contraindications:
diseases of the stomach of a chronic nature;
pregnancy and breastfeeding;
pathology of the heart or blood vessels;
blood diseases, diabetes, weak immunity;
exacerbation of infectious or viral diseases.
Numerous studies in the field of nutrition prove that the Rh factor has no effect on the digestibility of food. This means that the choice of products, menus and nutritional recommendations will be the same for the first positive and first negative blood groups.
In the book Nutrition by Blood Types, Peter D'Adamo writes that neither the Rh factor, nor gender, nor age do not matter when compiling a diet. However, his next bestseller, called 4 Blood Types - 4 Ways to Health, contains separate diet menus for 3 positive and 3 negative blood types. But they differ slightly.
Type O (blood type one) is called "hunter".
In the process of evolutionary development of mankind, they appeared first. The leading activity is hunting, meat predominated in the diet. Physiological features of the body in I blood group:
stronger immunity;
significant activity of the digestive system;
low rate of exchange processes.
"Hunters" extremely poorly tolerate food experiments. Weight loss by blood type will be successful if you increase the percentage of protein foods, minimize the intake of carbohydrate foods. Daily calorie content - 1500-1800 kcal. With the I blood group, maximum efforts are often required to "disperse" the metabolism.
“Hunters” with the first blood group are classified as sports mesomorphs and are endowed with increased stress resistance and strong immunity.

The menu is based on protein products.
An example daily diet might look like this:
Breakfast: stewed beef liver, buckwheat porridge, green tea.
Snack: Zucchini pancakes.
Lunch: borscht, veal steak, vegetables (preferably grilled).
Afternoon snack: chamomile tea, pumpkin seeds, plums.
Dinner: watercress, steamed fish cakes.
Type A (the second blood type) is called agrarian or "cultivator". They are described as somewhat hysterical people who are able to get rid of excessive stress solely through the transition to a vegetarian diet and a complete rejection of meat.
Nutrition for 2 blood groups is divided into two types: for 2 negative and 2 positive. Each of them has its own rules and nuances of application.
The second negative blood type has its own characteristics. Its owners are characterized by the presence of:
high production of the hormone cortisol during excitement;
thick blood that provokes the formation of blood clots;
fatty deposits.
This situation arose when grain became the main food instead of meat. The body had to rebuild, change the digestive system. At the same time, the assimilation of animal proteins - dairy products, meat - worsened.
The menu for each day should include the following components:
fresh, thoroughly washed vegetables;
porridge (but not with milk!);
legumes;
vegetable and fruit freshly squeezed juices (preferably juice from celery, apples and carrots);
Dinner can be varied with a glass of quality red wine.

You can often hear questions about the difference in the list of products for people with a third negative blood group. In fact, there are no special differences here.
All the same products are allowed, the same products are prohibited. But, here it is worth paying more attention to nutrition. Negative Rh makes the body more receptive to nutrition. It is necessary to completely eliminate prohibited foods from the diet, and also be very careful about those allowed for limited use.

People whose blood belongs to group 4 should eat less and more often. So they will counteract digestive problems caused by insufficiency of stomach acid and peptic enzymes.
Dr. D'Adamo suggests that type AB pays attention to the combination of foods in the diet. For example, you will digest and absorb food more efficiently if you avoid starches and proteins in the same meal.

Type AB women should avoid foods that thicken the blood. A study by Danish scientists found that group 4 is the most vulnerable to the development of venous thromboembolism (blood clots in the veins), accounting for 20% of the risk. Experts studied data on 66,001 people who were followed up for 33 years from 1977 to 2010 and concluded that the AB blood type should be included in genetic screening for thrombophilia.
Missing nutrients can be obtained from neutral products - those that complement and diversify the menu.
Women with blood type 4 periodically need to eat:
Animal liver, cod.
Flaxseed, peanut butter or paste.
Almonds, cashews, pistachios, pine nuts.
Vegetables - green onions, tomatoes, red cabbage, zucchini.
Fruits, berries - raspberries, strawberries, currants, blueberries, blueberries, lingonberries, elderberries, dates, melons, watermelons, apples, peaches, apricots, dried fruits.
There are relatively few people with this combination of indicators, they are about 1% of all the inhabitants of our planet. But, they have their own characteristics, which are also important to consider. A small number of such people leads to the fact that it is very difficult to find product lists for them, which is understandable, because they always focus mainly on large populations.
What you can eat:
Lamb meat, rabbit meat, turkey.
Mackerel, pike, snails, any salmon fish, sardine, tuna.
Olive oil.
Garlic, parsley, curry, horseradish.
Peanuts, walnuts, chestnuts.

"Foods B6: vitamin intake norms" MoreThe list of prohibited foods is relatively small, but all of them can have a strong negative effect on the body:
Beef, veal, pork, chicken.
Cheese, whole milk.
Flounder, sea bass, haddock, crayfish, crabs, beluga.
Corn and sunflower oil.
Poppy, sesame, pumpkin, sunflower seeds.
Radish, Jerusalem artichoke, hot pepper, artichoke.
Black beans.
Mango, oranges, pomegranates, rhubarb.
Barley malt, cornstarch, vinegar.
Strong alcoholic drinks, orange juice, black tea.
Allspice, anise.
Such a diet combines the basics of vegetarianism, so meat must be limited. It is better to give preference to lean meats and poultry.
Nutrition should be light and balanced, but the main thing is that the body must receive a large amount of vitamins and microelements.
When preparing dishes, the emphasis is shown not on their taste, but more on usefulness.
Food should be useful, so the way it is prepared is also important. Allowed foods are best boiled, baked, stewed, steamed in order to preserve their healing properties as much as possible.
Other recommendations are:
Reduce the volume of daily portions, while it is imperative to control the flow of fluid into the body (water).
The amount of fat in the daily diet is shown to be minimized, while vegetable fiber and natural antioxidants, together with vitamins, should prevail in excess.
Alcohol, coffee, carbonated drinks are considered forbidden; it is recommended to quench thirst with herbal decoctions or green tea.
Limit salt, sugar is prohibited, butter is also desirable to be excluded, and olive oil is the best option.
You need to eat up to 5 times a day. In the morning, breakfast can be hearty and "energetic", lunch can be healthy and nutritious, and dinner (not late in the evening) can be light, with a feeling of malnutrition in the stomach. For lunch - vegetables, fruits.

About 40% of the world's population has type 1 blood. They need nutritional supplements with iodine, manganese, calcium, vitamins K and B.
If in order to achieve a positive result - weight loss - a diet for the first blood type is chosen, a number of actions are required:
Include more seafood, algae (seaweed). They make up for iodine deficiency. This trace element is part of the thyroid hormones, and it has a direct effect on metabolism. Activate the production of thyroid hormones radish, radish.
Give preference to green vegetables. Cucumbers, spinach, broccoli, green onions strengthen the body.
Eliminate from the diet heavy foods that overload the digestive system (fried foods, smoked foods, convenience foods, canned food, alcohol).
Products are preferable to boil, stew, steam, bake on the grill.
Practice dosed physical activity with high intensity (aerobics, swimming, skiing).
Proteins are the basis of the hunter's diet. Foods to speed up metabolism will help them lose weight. This, for example, red meat, liver. Pork, goose are digested poorly.

"Nutrition for a nursing mother: the impact on the child's body" MoreOn Earth, almost 39% of people have 2 blood types.
Thanks to the correct selection of products, toxins will be removed from the body, the work of the intestines and stomach will normalize. To obtain significant results, it is advised:
exercise moderately - walking, swimming, yoga;
eliminate emotional stress;
avoid overwork;
give up sweets, pastries;
take chromium and selenium, vitamin E, B.
15% of the world's population have type 3 blood. During the diet, these people have the richest diet, but they are more likely to be overweight than others. They need to additionally take magnesium, lecithin. They are suitable for such sports as running and walking, swimming, exercise bike, tennis, and yoga classes are also useful.
Representatives of the mixed group are only 6%. This type of people need intense physical activity - running, cycling, swimming. Zinc, selenium, vitamins B are recommended from food additives.
For people with the fourth blood group, in order to get rid of excess weight, it is shown to reduce daily fat intake, and focus mainly on proteins and dietary fiber.
Bread made from wheat flour and sweets, as in all other diets, are considered forbidden foods, they will not help a patient with 4 positive blood groups lose weight.
The Blood Type Diet can be followed for life as it provides a balanced diet. But if the dietary regime is observed temporarily, you need to switch to a regular nutrition system smoothly. For at least a week, you should keep the diet menu, adding only a small amount of prohibited foods to it.
Despite the safe list of products, the technique is only suitable for healthy people who do not need medical nutrition. With gastrointestinal disease and other health problems, diet can make you feel worse. To prevent this from happening, consult a specialist before using it.
Remember that there is no evidence-based scientific basis, confirmed by clinical studies, nutrition by blood group does not have.
