The effectiveness of the medication depends significantly on the body mass index. The conclusion reached by American scientists is that obese people may not receive an adequate dose due to the neglect of this fact by doctors. this is especially true of antibiotics.

Obese patients with severe infections probably receive only half the required dose. This not only leaves the treatment ineffective, but also creates resistance to antibiotics.

This is less true for long-term medications such as those for controlling blood pressure or cholesterol. They are often monitored and the doses adjusted.

Pharmaceutical companies are increasingly paying attention to this problem and note the appropriate doses in the leaflets.
