New claims about the genesis of obesity. This time, viruses and infections are blamed. Studies show that about 33% of middle-aged obese people are carriers of the AD-36 virus. At the same time, it is found in only 11% of people with a normal body mass index. Obesity remains a serious problem in the United States, where about a third of adults are overweight, as are about 16% of children ages 2 to 19.
Obesity is a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and others. According to some experts, it is quite possible that a virus is hiding behind the obesity pandemic. Adenoviruses are extremely common and cause various pathologies - colds, gastrointestinal inflammation, eye infections, bronchitis, pneumonia.
There was talk of AD-36 and weight a decade ago, when tests were done in Louisiana showing that 15% of those covered had antibodies - ie. have been in contact with the virus at some point. AD-37 was a proven cause of obesity in chickens after a study in 2006, which provoked the resumption of research on AD-36 shortly thereafter.
Experts do not support the thesis that it is the only cause of obesity, but it is definitely involved as an etiological factor in some cases.
