Obesity Is Also Harmful To The Gums

Overweight people find it harder to fight gingivitis and are prone to tooth loss

Already about 50 diseases are associated with obesity. Gum involvement is another issue added to the list.

People for whom body weight is a problem find it difficult to fight gingivitis and are prone to losing permanent teeth. Researchers at Boston University Medical Center in Massachusetts have found such an addiction in mice, according to New Scientist magazine.

They infected two types of mice with Porphyromonas gingivalis, the cause of gingivitis. Some of them were infected directly on the gums, while in others the infection was through the bloodstream. In both cases, obese mice could not cope with the infection. In addition, within 10 days they lost up to 40% of the bone substance in the jaws.

Solomon Amar, engaged in the study, believes that overweight and obese people should be more careful about the condition of their teeth and gums. He advises regular visits to the dentist's office, especially for those at risk.
