The risks and benefits associated with being overweight in people over 70 are different from those in younger people ....
The results of a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society show that older people who weigh a few pounds over the norm live longer and are healthier than those whose weight is below or below normal.
Australian researchers have conducted a study to determine the relationship between different values of body mass index and the risk of death in the elderly.
Prof. Flicker and colleagues at the University of Western Australia tracked the health and life expectancy of a group of volunteers between the ages of 70 and 75. The study lasted for more than 10 years.
After analyzing the collected data, it became clear that older participants whose weight and a few pounds (but not too much) above the norm have the lowest risk of death.
According to the study leader, the risks and benefits of being overweight in people over 70 are different from those in younger people.
Regardless of weight, however, regular physical activity, even if not heavy and intense, reduces the risk of mortality by 25% in men and by 50% in women.
