It is clear to many that regular consumption of so-called "junk food" and sweets is harmful to the waist . Processed foods also pose another potential and hitherto unknown risk - they can lead to the development of mental illness , researchers warn.
According to Dr. Julia Rockledge of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, processed foods are the cause of the epidemic of mental illness .
She believes that the transition from eating foods with whole grains to processed and unhealthy foods leads to an increase in mental disorders and the emergence of antidepressants .
Our diet has changed rapidly over the last 50 years and it is not difficult to believe that this change has an impact on our mental health, she added.
Dr. Rukledge studies the relationship between diet and the development of conditions such as depression , anxiety , attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, premenstrual syndrome and traumatic stress disorder . It turns out that people do not consume food that is adequate to the needs of the body.
Rickledge's research team is conducting a study to determine whether 2-brand multivitamin formulas can help with mental disorders. These supplements include vitamins A, C, D, E, B, riboflavin , thiamine, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, potassium and some amino acids . Between 60% and 80% of the people in the study responded to this therapy.
Although Dr. Rukledge is sure that supplements help the brain, it is not entirely clear what the exact mechanism by which the symptoms of mental disorders are affected is .
The study found that among 64% of people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who take these supplements, there is a lower incidence of symptoms after eight weeks. In comparison, this improvement was observed among 37% of those taking placebo.
The symptoms of the postmenstrual syndrome are also relieved by 65% of those affected who take additional vitamins and minerals , DailyMail writes .
