A new study conducted at the Mayo Clinic , showed that regular intake of coffee reduces the risk of primary sclerosing cholangitis - autoimmune liver disease. Although rare, it is an extremely serious condition.

 

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is an inflammatory disease of the bile duct that clogs, holding bile in the liver. This, in turn, leads to cirrhosis, liver failure and cancer.


 

 

The researchers studied a large group of patients with sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cirrhosis. Each patient was compared to a healthy individual with similar physical characteristics. Analyzing the eating habits of the participants in the study and control group, the team noticed that regular coffee intake was associated with a lower incidence of liver disease.

 

According to Dr. Konstantinos Lazaridis of the Mayo Clinic team , the finding could be useful for future treatment of liver disease.
