Parents can achieve change by teaching their children to self-regulate as well as by setting rules for eating at home.

Children have a healthier diet when their parents set limits on what can and can not eat and pay attention to their habits related to nutrition , according to a new study. 
 
Researchers at the University of Buffalo, USA, analyzed data from nearly 9,000 American children, whose self-regulation begins at age 2. The rules on the part of the parents regarding nutrition are checked when the young participants turn 4 years old. 
 
Parents can make a difference by teaching their children to self-regulate, as well as by setting rules for eating at home, scientists at the University of Buffalo explain. They found that the combination of parental rules and children's ability to self-regulate their behavior worked best when it came to "teaching" young children to eat healthily. 
 
Researchers have found that children who can self-regulate at the age of two have healthier habits at age 4, when there are established rules for parents to eat . 
 
Experts also believe that the ability to self-regulate does not lead to a big difference in children's eating habits. 
 
 
 
Scientists suggest that without these limits set by educators, the benefits of self-regulation in weight and childhood obesity may be reduced. The study proves how important parental involvement is in eating habits . 
 
The data was presented in Boston during the Anti-Obesity Week - an annual meeting of experts who fight this problem.
