Spice Useful In Inflammation?

Turmeric has been used as an anti-inflammatory in traditional Indian medicine for centuries.

Curcumin, an extract of the light yellow spice turmeric and an ingredient in the popular curry , may be useful in treating painful inflammatory conditions such as tendinitis and arthritis, according to a study by the University of Nottingham, UK, and Ludwig-Maximillians University in Munich, Germany. .

The study does not state that curry, turmeric, or curcumin cure inflammatory processes, but emphasizes the role of nutrition in relieving painful conditions, the research team explains.

Turmeric has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine as an anti-inflammatory for symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome and other disorders.

Based on the potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin, a number of studies have investigated its benefits for various diseases, including some cancers and cirrhosis of the liver.

The scientists in the present study observed the effects that the ingredient has on the inflammatory and degenerative properties caused by molecules called interleukins . According to the results, curcumin blocks and protects against the inflammatory process.

Tendons, the strong connections of fibrous connective tissue that connect muscles to bones, are essential for motor skills as they transmit the force of muscle contraction to the bones. However, they are prone to injury , especially in athletes who overload their joints.

Tendinitis is a form of tendon inflammation that causes pain and weakness in the joints. It is common in the shoulders, elbows, knees, thighs, heels and wrists.

Tendinitis is also associated with other arthritic and rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, or metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

are mainly used to relieve pain and inflammation. In more severe cases, steroid injections are given directly into the tendons to control the pain.

However, medications are associated with side effects such as headaches, drowsiness, fatigue, as well as stomach ulcers, nausea, vomiting, and other problems that affect the digestive system.
