Eating strawberries helps to slow down the aging process. The delicious fruit also has a protective effect against cancer, Spanish and Italian scientists have found.
A new study shows that the consumption of strawberries has a beneficial effect and increases the levels of antioxidants in the blood.
Higher levels of antioxidants are useful in combating the effects of oxidative stress , the aging process and reduce the risk of developing diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease .
The study involved 12 healthy volunteers who ate a pound of strawberries for 2 weeks.
The researchers took blood samples from participants after 4, 8, 12 and 16 days, and a month later.
The results are clear - regular consumption of strawberries increases the levels of antioxidants in the blood and offers protection of red blood cells from hemolysis.
The power of strawberries lies in the high levels of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, known for their antioxidant properties, emphasize scientists from the Polytechnic University, Marche, Italy and the University of Granada, Spain.
Strawberries are an important part of a healthy and balanced diet and should be one of the five types of fruit we should eat every day , says the study's lead author, Dr. Maurizio Batino of Italy's Polytechnic University.
The body has a rich arsenal of different antioxidant mechanisms that act at different levels. They can be a cellular tool that "repairs" oxidized genetic material, or molecules produced by the body itself or consumed through food that neutralize free radicals, says Dr. Jose Luis Quiles of the University of Granada.
The beneficial substances reduce oxidative stress, which occurs in cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and even in physiological processes such as childbirth, aging, exercise. Antioxidants protect the body by fighting reactive oxygen species, free radicals.
When the level of oxidation exceeds this antioxidant protection, oxidative stress occurs, explains Dr. Jose Luis Quiles.
The research team is also preparing an analysis - whether strawberries have similar benefits at lower consumption, for example 150-200 g per day, as well as which varieties contain the most antioxidants.
