Drinking coffee and tea can prevent cirrhosis . Chronic liver disease is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly 32,000 people die from it every year. A new study published in the Journal of Hepatology shows that both hot drinks are a good way to prevent the disease.
Cirrhosis can occur mainly due to frequent use of alcohol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and due to other factors. In addition to avoiding alcohol, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle, drinking coffee and tea also protect our liver. This was stated by the research team led by Dr. Sarva Darvish Murad, a hepatologist at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It marks the beginning of research into the effects of beverages on this vital organ of the human body.
"There are a lot of epidemiological and experimental data that show that coffee helps increase liver enzymes, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease , cirrhosis and liver cancer. We were curious whether coffee consumption has a positive effect on liver hardness. liver in people who do not have chronic liver disease, ”explains Dr. Murad.
The team studied the data of 2,244 participants (aged 45 and over) in a large study conducted in Rotterdam. Each underwent a complete examination, including anthropometric measurements such as body mass index (BMI), height, blood tests and an abdominal scanner for a more accurate examination of the liver. Participants' eating and drinking habits were assessed using a survey of 389 questions, including more on tea and coffee consumption .
Study participants were divided into three categories according to how and how much they drank both beverages: non-drinkers, moderate tea and coffee drinkers (defined as up to three cups a day) and frequent drinkers (defined as drinking three or more cups each day). On the other hand, three types of tea are used - green, black and herbal.
Scientists are taking an aggressive approach to find a link between coffee and tea consumption and liver fibrosis. They also use many confusing factors, including age, gender, cigarette use, physical activity, and healthy eating patterns.
The results of the study show that frequent consumption of coffee and herbal tea correlates with a significantly lower risk of liver stiffness. It does not depend on the patient's lifestyle. They also establish the beneficial effect of coffee on liver stiffness. This is evidenced by the data of both healthy people and those with fatty liver.
