There is new evidence that apple peels have exceptional anti-cancer properties. Researchers have studied their chemical composition and found a group of phyto-substances that are effective in fighting at least three types of cancer - breast, colon and liver.

A diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables has a proven role in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases. More importantly, however, it is gradually becoming clear which chemical compounds are responsible for the benefits of natural products. Recently, attention has been focused on aromatic compounds isolated from the seeds and peel of fruits and vegetables.

Apples are the largest source of these compounds - their average content varies between 100 mg and 347 mg per 100 g of fresh fruit. They are also rich in another group of useful compounds - flavonoids. According to a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the shell has a significant anti-tumor effect due to its antioxidant and antiproliferative activity.

The next time you peel your apple, think about whether you are not deprived of valuable vitamins, minerals, some of them antioxidants. Not only will you save time, but it will be healthier if you leave the blade. And don't forget - "one apple a day, keep the doctor away from me"!
