Therapeutic Diet № 5 P - Nutrition In Chronic Pancreatitis

Therapeutic diet № 5P is prescribed for chronic pancreatitis and aims to normalize the work of the pancreas, to provide mechanical and chemical sparing of the stomach and intestines, to reduce the excitability of bile, to prevent fatty infiltration of the liver.

Pancreatitis  is another disease in which you lose weight. It can be acute or chronic, occurs due to impaired liver and bile function, malnutrition, long intervals between meals and others. Pancreatitis can be a complication resulting from a duodenal ulcer.

The disease is often accompanied by severe abdominal pain, which is usually felt in the left lower back and can be both acute and dull. After eating it often increases. Other symptoms: nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea, etc.
Individual treatment is usually prescribed by a doctor, which mainly consists of complete rest and restriction of certain foods. A special healing diet also helps to reduce pain.

Therapeutic diet № 5P is prescribed for chronic pancreatitis in the recovery period after exacerbation and without exacerbation of the condition.

Purpose of the diet in chronic pancreatitis

The diet aims to normalize the work of the pancreas, to provide mechanical and chemical sparing of the stomach and intestines, to reduce the excitability of bile, to prevent fatty infiltration of the liver and pancreas.

General characteristics of the diet № 5P

The diet is characterized by increased protein content, reduction of fats and carbohydrates, in particular sugar.

Extracts, purines, animal fats, cholesterol, essential oils, crude fiber are severely limited.

Fried dishes are forbidden. The amount of vitamins and lipotropic substances is increased. The food is mainly ground or ground, boiled in water or steamed, baked. Hot and very cold dishes are excluded.

Feeding should be 4-5 times a day (every 3-4 hours).

Chemical composition and energy value of the diet in chronic pancreatitis

  • protein: 110-120 grams (60-65% animal);
  • fat: 80 grams (15-20% vegetable);
  • carbohydrates: 350-400 grams (30-40 grams of sugar);
  • calories: 2600-2700 kcal;
  • 20-30 grams of xylitol instead of sugar in sweet dishes;
  • sodium chloride (table salt): 10 grams;
  • free liquid: 1.5 liters.
Soups
  • Allowed: vegetarian, mashed potatoes, carrots, zucchini, squash; oatmeal, semolina, buckwheat, rice, noodles. Add 5 grams of butter and 10 grams of sour cream.
  • Prohibited: soups prepared on the basis of meat and fish broths, vegetable and mushroom decoctions, milk soups, sour soups.
Bread and pasta
  • Allowed: unripe or dried wheat bread, rusks, unsweetened dry biscuits.
  • Prohibited: rye and fresh bread, butter and puff pastry.
Meat and birds
  • Allowed: lean species - beef, veal, rabbit, chicken, turkey. Meat is cleaned of fascia, tendons and fat, birds - of skins. It is boiled or steamed, cut into small pieces, purees, souffles, meatballs are made.
  • Prohibited: fatty species - goose, duck; fried, stewed and smoked meat, canned food, sausages, offal (liver, brain, kidneys).
Fish
  • Allowed: lean species, boiled, cut into pieces or chopped fish, jelly after cooking.
  • Prohibited: oily fish, also fried, stewed, smoked, salted, canned, caviar.
Dairy products
  • Allowed: low-fat dairy products are preferable - fresh non-sour cottage cheese with a fat content of 9% and skimmed, natural calcined cottage cheese, steamed or baked puddings. Fresh milk if tolerated. Sour milk drinks. Different types of cream - as an addition to dishes. Soft and low-fat cheeses.
  • Prohibited: high-fat and sweetened dairy products.
Eggs
  • Allowed: omelet made from the whites of 2 eggs, the yolks are limited to 1/2 per day in the dishes.
  • Prohibited: dishes with whole eggs, especially hard-boiled, fried.
Cereals
  • Allowed: semi-liquid porridges and purees of buckwheat, semolina, rice, oats; prepared with water and half fresh milk. Souffles, puddings with cottage cheese, casserole, cooked pasta are made.
  • Prohibited: legumes, crumbly porridge; barley porridge, millet and corn products are limited.
Vegetables
  • Allowed: boiled and baked in the form of puree. Potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, beets, zucchini, squash, green peas.
  • Prohibited: white cabbage, eggplant, turnips, radishes, onions, garlic, spinach, sorrel, sweet peppers, mushrooms.
Appetizers:
  • Appetizers should not be consumed by people with chronic pancreatitis.
Fruits, sweets and confectionery
  • Allowed: ripe soft and non-sour fruits and berries, pureed raw; baked apples; pureed compotes of fresh or dried fruit, mousses with xylitol or semi-sweets with sugar.
  • Prohibited: raw unpeeled fruits and berries, grapes, dates, raisins, bananas, confectionery, chocolate, jam, ice cream.
Sauces and spices
  • Allowed: milk, fruit semi-sweet sauces, also prepared on the basis of non-concentrated vegetable decoction. The flour is not baked or fried.
  • Prohibited: sauces made from meat, fish or mushroom broths, tomato sauce, all spices.
Beverages
  • Allowed: weak tea with lemon, slightly sweetened with sugar or use xylitol, add milk. Rosehip decoction. Fruit juices diluted with water - if tolerated.
  • Prohibited: coffee, cocoa, carbonated and cold drinks, grape juice, alcohol.
Fat
  • Allowed: butter (30 grams), refined vegetable fats (10-5 grams) - added to dishes.

Sample menu for chronic pancreatitis:

  • First breakfast: boiled meat, oatmeal with milk, tea;
  • Breakfast: steamed protein omelet, rosehip decoction;
  • Lunch: vegetarian soup of chopped vegetables, boiled meat, boiled potatoes, mashed dried fruit compote;
  • Afternoon snack: calcined cottage cheese, tea with milk;
  • Dinner: boiled fish, carrot puree, tea with milk.
  • Before bed: lactic acid drink.
