Consumption of one sausage or two slices of bacon a day increases by 1/5 the risk of pancreatic cancer, according to an analysis of 11 studies involving 6,000 people affected by cancer. 

 
Regular consumption of even relatively small amounts of processed meat can increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, say Swedish scientists. 
 
The disease has no specific signs in its initial stages. Therefore, its early diagnosis is difficult and often at the first complaints there is already a spread of the disease in other organs of the body.
 
The most common symptoms are: 
  • pain - can be dull, constant or in the form of crises. When localized in the head of the pancreas, the pain is usually in the upper right half of the abdomen, and when localized in the tail - in the upper left half. It can radiate to the back or cover the entire abdomen. It is characteristic that it intensifies after eating and lying down;
  • nausea, possible vomiting;
  • loss of appetite;
  • weight loss;
  • general weakness and easy fatigue. 
 
 
The researchers found that consuming 50 grams of processed meat a day increased the risk of pancreatic cancer by 19%. The amount is equivalent to a few slices of ham or salami, one hot dog, one sausage or two slices of bacon.
 
It was found that the consumption of 100 g per day increases the risk of cancer by 38%, and 150 g - by 57%. 
 
However, the risk of eating meat is relatively lower than that caused by smoking, say researchers from the California Institute in Stockholm. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of pancreatic cancer by 74%. 
 
The results are published in the British Journal of Cancer .
