Oily fish, broccoli, avocados, nuts and seeds are just some of the foods that improve brain function.
Consumption of certain foods can enhance brain function. To be healthy, the brain requires certain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants to reduce stress and inflammation, as they are associated with brain aging and certain neurodegenerative disorders .
Oily fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which help strengthen the brain. A 2017 study found that people with high levels of omega-3 had increased blood flow to the brain, but also better thinking skills. Among the types of oily fish are salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring and sardines.
Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than other types of chocolate. These antioxidants are especially important for brain health because they stimulate blood flow to the brain and support better memory. Real dark chocolate is one that contains over 70% cocoa.
Like dark chocolate, fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and blackcurrants contain many antioxidants that are good for the brain . Antioxidants reduce inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. The antioxidants in these fruits are: anthocyanins, caffeic acid, catechins and quercetin. They slow down age-related neurodegenerative diseases, but also enhance memory.
Consuming more nuts and seeds is extremely beneficial for the brain, as these foods contain omega-3s and antioxidants . A 2014 study found that higher nut intake was associated with improved brain function in old age. Most nuts also contain vitamin E, which can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Examples are sunflower seeds, almonds and hazelnuts.
Avocados are a source of healthy unsaturated fats that support the brain. Eating avocados can lower blood pressure, and high blood pressure is associated with cognitive decline . Avocados also improve brain function because they stimulate blood flow to it.
In addition to being low in calories, broccoli is a good source of fiber, very good for the brain. Broccoli is also rich in compounds called glucosinolates , and when the body breaks them down, isothiocyanates are produced. They reduce oxidative stress and the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Broccoli also contains vitamin C and flavonoids, which improve brain health.
