The problem is the misconception that overweight and obesity are becoming the norm, experts say.
Overweight women tend to underestimate both their own and those of their children, according to preliminary data from a study by Columbia University in New York.
"These people find their weight normal. The problem is the misconception that overweight and obesity are becoming the norm, "said Nicolas Dumas, head of the study. It includes 222 mothers and children. The research team interviewed the participants about their medical record and social background. Measurements of height, weight and body mass index were also performed.
According to the results, nearly 2/3 of mothers and 40% of children aged 7-13 are overweight or obese. It turns out that the majority of overweight people weigh more than they thought, which indicates an underestimation of the problem, the researchers said.
82% of obese women underestimate their weight, compared to 43% of overweight women and 13% of normal weight women. 86% of children do not realize that they have a problem with overweight or obesity, compared to only 15% of children with normal weight.
Participants' misperceptions in this regard are not limited to how they view themselves - nearly half of overweight mothers believe that their child's weight is normal. In addition, only 41% of children think that their mothers need to lose weight.
