U.S. researchers have found that the adenovirus virus, which usually causes respiratory infections, can also cause obesity in children.

Experts from the University of California conducted a study among 124 children aged 8 to 18 years.

The results showed that overweight children, in whom antibodies to adenovirus 36 were also found, weighed an average of 16 kg heavier than their peers without such antibodies.

The study authors found that antibodies to the AD36 virus were found in 15 of the 67 obese children, and only 4 of the normal-weight adolescents who participated in the study.
