Dynamic tests examining airway hypersensitivity show a higher one among obese asthmatics. This also explains the more severe nature of the latter in these patients. They encounter difficulties both in deep inhalation and in complete exhalation of the inhaled air.

A team of Dr. Robin Taylor from the University of Otago, Dunedin, studied the changes in the respiratory tract and lung volume that occur in acute constriction. 30 women with asthma were covered - 10 with normal, 10 with overweight and 10 with obesity.
The degree of bronchial obstruction was similar in all patients after a susceptibility test. However, a difference was observed in the vital capacity and it significantly depended on the Body Mass Index. In those with a high index, the residual volume after exhalation was greater and the inspiratory volume decreased.

All this shows that obese patients are even more burdened by asthma due to the increasing difficulty in exhaling air. Taylor emphasizes that conventional tests applied in practice may not give an accurate result among these individuals and lead to misinterpretations.
